1. Lessons from the Moon for Survival

Speaker:
Mr. Lukas Viglietti
Airline pilot Swiss airlines, Founder of SwissApollo, Author of Apollo Confidential

Lukas Viglietti is an airline pilot and Captain flying long haul flights for SWISS airlines. In 2009, together with his wife Bettina, he founded SwissApollo in order to organize events inspiring people with the testimonies of the Apollo Astronauts. He is the author of the book ‘Apollo Confidential’, the biographies of the moonwalkers. He produced several space shows in Switzerland and the USA.

Lecture:
Lukas’ work as an airline pilot allowed him to regularly meet and get close to many key participants in the Apollo program. In his lecture he will draw lessons from the past for survival and well being in space. Next to psychological experiences this will include engineering solutions for optimizing the health of astronauts.

2. Healthy Food for a Happy Life on Mars

Speaker:
Dr. Ir. Wieger Wamelink
Senior Ecologist and Exo-biologist at Wageningen University

Dr. Wieger Wamelink leads the project Food for Mars and Moon since 2012. In this project Mars soil simulant is used to experiment with growing crops for future colonists.

Lecture:
To be able to live on Mars food production will be essential. But there is more to it; food can keep you healthy (e.g. protection against Martian radiation), eating a tastefull meal can boost your spirits and why do we need chicken?

3. Happiness on Mars compared to Earth

Speakers:
Federico Monaco
Sociologist at Parma University
&
Carlo Ivaldi
Student Anthropology at Leiden University

Federico Monaco is doing research between science and society, using virtual reality for simulating health care, medicine and surgery. He has been collaborating with the Italian Mars Society for 5 years, looking at community life in harsh environments and measuring the health of astronauts.

Carlo Ivaldi is doing an anthropological research on how space advocacy communities like the Mars Society promote outer space exploration and the colonization of Mars. In this research he will analyze the role of space advocacy communities in our society, the potential impact they can exercise and the external influences that affect them.

Lecture:
Can happiness on Mars be pursued in the same way as on Earth?
When creating a Martian colony, what could we transfer from Earth as
rights, duties and values given individual, social, cultural and
psychological requirements? Our speakers will lead you across an
exploration of the human’s pursuit of happiness. Their aim is to
develop socio-cultural environments for space communities design that
will allow people to live happily in extreme conditions.

4. Design as the gateway to an enriching life on Mars

Speakers:
Mr. Alfredo Munoz
Founder of ABIBOO Studio & Founding Board Member of SONet

Mr. Guillem Anglada
Research fellow at Institut de Ciències de l’Espai

Mr. Alfredo Munoz is a Spanish architect who has designed a Martian self-sufficient cliff city.
Mr. Guillem Anglada-Escudé is a Spanish astronomer. In 2016, he led a team of astronomers which resulted in the confirmation of the existence of Proxima Centauri b, the closest potentially habitable extrasolar planet to Earth.

Lecture:
For future Martians to thrive, not only do they have to be safe, but they also need a sense of belonging, identity and community. Urban design and architecture play a critical role in creating the right emotional and societal environment for humans to enjoy a fulfilling life. Nüwa cliff city is a concept study on how to potentially achieve this goal while building a scalable and self-sufficient permanent settlement on Mars.

5. Managing Health in Space with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Speaker:
Dr. Nicky Hekster
EMEA Technical and Business Development Lead for IBM

Dr. Nicky Hekster has been working on AI for over 25 years. He currently works at IBM solving challenges In Healthcare & Life Sciences with AI technology. He was the first in Benelux to introduce the IBM Watson platform, a technology that is now widely used, but also could serve to support the health of astronauts and Mars colonists.

Lecture:
In this lecture dr. Hekster will show how AI can contribute to the health and well-being of people who are far away from earth and hence from medical specialists. Can the healthcare technologies used in StarTrek become reality? And what is happening already to monitor the health of astronauts in the ISS?
